Tacuatí library
I’m out of Peace Corps now, but I’m still cheerleading for the public library in my old site Tacuatí. Books are incredibly rare and expensive out there - kids don’t have textbooks, stores don’t carry newspapers, and few families have books on their shelves. So the library, while small, is an important step to promoting functional literacy.
Mainly what they’ve got right now are weighty reference tomes and impenetrable volumes of Spanish and Paraguayan classics. What they desperately need are children’s books and accessible material for beginning readers. Think pictures, think talking animals, think very basic health, educational, and self-help titles.
Here’s an Amazon list to get you started.
If you’d like to send something, you can either mail it directly (US mail only - FedEx, DHL, and UPS don’t ship all the way out there) or send it to me, and I’ll forward it in my next package.
The Tacuatí address is:
Juzgado de Paz
Tacuatí
Dpto. San Pedro
Paraguay
A whole international address without a single number in it - strange but true.
